UNOFFICIAL CATEGORIES

The jury for the Children’s category, Spectators of the Future, awarded the prize to Valentino y el Clan Clan by director David Bisbano.

The Latin American Federation of Image and Sound Schools (FEISAL) awarded its prizes to Los Herederos by Eugenio Polgovsky, and El Milagro del Papa by Jose Luis Valle, with honorable mention going to Bagatela by Jorge Caballero.

The Press Warrior prize for a Mexican Fiction Feature Film was awarded to Voy a Explotar by Gerardo Naranjo.

The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) awarded its prizes to La Nana, directed by Sebastian Silva, and Oveja Negra, directed by Humberto Hinojosa Ozcariz.

The Mescal Jury awarded its prize in the category of Mexican Fiction Feature Film to Voy a Explotar by director Gerardo Naranjo.

The Festival closed the 24^th Edition on a spectacular red carpet where all the winners of the prizes announced officially at the press conference paraded.

The ceremony was hosted by actress Dolores Heredia and singer Karina Rico who began by handing out the prizes, then thanking everyone for participating, reminding them that … for Movies, March in Guadalajara.

After the closing ceremony, the Festival winners held a press conference where they answered questions posed by the press and shared anecdotes and experiences during the filming of the movies with those present.

The night ended with the Festival’s Closing Party that took place at the Arch Monument in Guadalajara where all participants in this edition enjoyed a magical evening where shorts were screened, and listened to the music of Radaid, Troker, La Yaga, Zaico Circus, Celso Piña and La Sonora Kaliente, besides the spectacular fireworks that lit up the night for a perfect ending to FICG24.

Diego Muñoz, director, actors Miguel Rodarte, Roberto Sosa Rodriguez, Jose Octavio Casto, Jose Concepción, Andres Montiel and musician Pablo Valero were present to introduce Bala Mordida.

“What I am looking for n this movie is to portray a reality in Mexico and Latin America: corruption,” said Diego Muñoz.

Caja Negra was also presented by director Ariel Gordon who said that the actors’ improvisation at work was important to him.

Next it was the turn for El Cuerno de la Abundancia and director Juan Carlos Tabio, actresses Mirta Ibarra and Laura de la Uz were present. The film was described as a tragicomedy that portrays the reality that Cuba is experiencing.

The conference ended with the presentation of the controversial film La Pasión de Gabriel with the presence of director Luis Alberto Restrepo and actress Ana Cecilia Sanchez.

Part of the project is ManWoz, an exhibit of paintings by her friend Jacek Wozniac. The musician commented that new paintings were being made everyday for the purpose of displaying art work made in Guadalajara.

Manu Chao is a die-hard movie fan. She has written scripts but has never made a work dedicated entirely to movies since the time she devotes to her music leaves her very little time free.

There was also a press conference held for the feature-length film The Burning Plain that was attended by Guillermo Arriaga, director and scriptwriter, Alejandro Garcia, producer, Adrian Zurita, associate producer, and actors Joaquin de Almeida, Jose Maria Yasnik and Brett Cullen.

“It is easier for me to make a film where the stories do not have a fixed timeline as opposed to those that are sequential,” the director said. He also commented that Mexican movies are present at the world’s most important festivals due to their vanguard and great quality.

Later the books Placeres en Imagen and Abismos de Pasión were presented. The event was moderated by photographer Pablo Ortiz accompanied by Angel Miguel, the author of Placeres en Imagen, Eduardo de la Vega Alfaro, coordinator of the research center and movie studios, and Diego Galan, author of Abismos de Pasión and advisor to the Festival. They invited the attendees to enjoy both books and then cocktails were served.

The gala event was the feature-length film The Burning Plain by Guillermo Arriaga, who also wrote the scripts for Babel and Amores Perros.

Mexican director Arturo Ripstein, Guillermo Arriaga, Alejandro Garcia, Adrian Zurita, Joaquin de Almeida, Brett Cullen and Jose Maria Yaspik strolled up the red carpet. Yaspik also came to the Festival for his feature-length film Sin Nombre.

Director Guillermo Arriaga congratulated Raul Padilla for organizing events such as the International Book Fair and the International Film Festival in Guadalajara.

The filmmaker’s parents were present in box seats to support their son, as was his friend Alejandro Fernandez, a singer from Guadalajara. The gala benefited the social programs of Corporativa de Fundaciones, A.C.

The event was attended by Lupita Infante and other relatives who expressed their gratitude for the homage, and then enjoyed the cocktails that were prepared for all the guests.

Later, the book Manuel Gonzalez Casanova was presented. Gonzalez Casanova was a pioneer of university films and an important figure in the history of studies about the Mexican film industry. Armando Casas, Director of CUEC, was present as were Jose Rodriguez, a student of Maestro Casanova, Gabriel Rodriguez, author of the book, and Maestro Manuel Gonzalez Casanova who thanked the author and the International Film Festival in Guadalajara for taking him into consideration. He commented that he had not done anything other than enjoy his passion for movies, and doing what he loves the most is his greatest satisfaction.

The book Dictionary of Mexican Film Directors was also presented. The presidium consisted of moderator Eduardo de la Vega, Patricia Riggen, Ricardo Benet, Luis Tovar, and the author of the 2009 edition of the book, Perla Ciuk.

“It seems to me it is a document that anyone can have and understand, not only specialists. Its value is that it transcends the specialized audience,” Luis Tovar said.

Encounters with the media were also held for the movies Corazón del tiempo, Niño Pez, La Última y nos Vamos, and Amor sin Fin.

The FICG’s Guadalajara International Prize was awarded to filmmaker and musician Emir Kusturica. “It is very special for me to come to Mexico and receive such an important prize,” Kusturica expressed.

He received the Mayahuel from actress Guadalupe Ontiveros as well as the keys to the city from Alfonso Petersen, the Mayor of Guadalajara.

Then his documentary Maradona by Kusturica was screened, a work that describes the world famous soccer idol’s vicissitudes during his career. After the film, the audience enjoyed an excellent concert by Kusturica and his band the TNSO.

Encounters with the media were held for the feature films Voy a Explotar, Camino, and Rabioso Sol Rabioso Cielo.

For Voy a Explotar Rebeca Jones, Martha Claudia Moreno, Maria Deschamps, Juan Pablo de Santiago, director Gerardo Naranjo and producers Diego Luna and Pablo Cruz were present. The story describes the elopement of “Roman” (Juan Pablo de Santiago) and “Maru” (Maria Deschamps), two troubled teenagers.

The feature-length film Camino has won six Goya prizes, including best movie, best director and best actress. Director Javier Fesser and actress Manuela Velles Casariego were present.

During the last encounter with the media, Julian Hernandez presented his feature film Rabioso Sol Rabioso Cielo. He was accompanied by producer Roberto Fiesco and the stars of the movie, Giovanna Sacarias and Guillermo Villegas.

In the afternoon Carlos Monsivais presented his book Pedro Infante, Las Leyes de Querer. Relatives of this great immortal figure were present as well as followers and admirers of his achievements.

Video-clips were shown of the actor’s classic movies, such as Pepe el Toro and No Desearás la Mujer de tu Hijo.

On the third day of activities at FICG24, the red carpet looked plethoric with enthusiasm for the world debut of The Perfect Game by William Dear and producers David Salzberg and Christian Tureaud. It is worth mentioning that the box-office revenue for this gala event benefited Mi Gran Esperanza Foundation, devoted to the noble task of helping children with cancer.

Celebrities such as Jake T. Austin and Patricia Manterola walked up the red carpet as well as Mexican-American actress Eva Longoria who was the Mistress of Ceremony for the gala.

On the other hand, a press conference with actress Eva Longoria Parker was held, beginning with a screening of the trailer for Harvest, a documentary dealing with agricultural fieldwork done by immigrant children in the United States, that the actress co-produced.

“I feel blessed by life and I would like to carry out more philanthropic activities such as my foundation in Los Angeles, California called Parents Against Cancer that helps Latin children with this disease and their parents to lead a better quality life,” the actress said.

When asked about the humanitarian work done by celebrities, Eva said that she has the responsibility of giving a voice to those who do not have one, and what she enjoys most in life is philanthropy. She literally expressed, “I feel selfish enjoying it so much.” She further acknowledged that at this time her priority is her family and in second place her work.

As for Mexican actors she would like to work with, she said she would like to have a project with Jaime Camil and Kate del Castillo but that she would enjoy working in Mexico or with Mexican contents.

The conference closed with her answer to the question: who else would you rather be? The actress said that she would like to have been Oprah Winfrey for everything she has accomplished despite not coming from a privileged home, especially for her philanthropic example.

The exhibit allows us to learn about the development of Guillermo del Toro’s creations by displaying his creative process and everything behind his fantastic characters that we have seen in his movies Pan’s Labyrinth, Cronos and Hellboy, among others.

The Director of the FICG, Jorge Sanchez Sosa, as well as Carlos Durban were present. Durban, curator of the exhibit said, “I had to be here in Guillermo del Toro’s hometown.”

The day’s activities also included director Gerardo Tort who presented his movie Viaje Redondo as well as some of the cast members who talked to us about their experiences while filming the movie, and then screening it at the Festival.

Also director and scriptwriter Alicia Scherson together with star actor Diego Noguera presented the Chilean movie Turistas to the press, a competitor in the Ibero-American Feature-length Fiction category.

The Gala Event showed the feature-length film Sólo Quiero Caminar and afterwards the Guadalajara Prize was awarded to Guadalajara’s own actor, director and producer Gael Garcia Bernal.

In a star-studded night Colombian producer Victor Gaviria, Jose Maria Jaspik, Diego Luna and Gael Garcia among others strolled down the red carpet.

Gael Garcia received the Guadalajara Prize from the hands of fellow actor Daniel Gimenez Cacho for his important achievements as an actor, director and producer. “Here was my baptism by fire into the mysteries of films because it is where I made my first short film,” said the actor.

The Gala ended with the screening of the movie Sólo Quiero Caminar presented by Diego Luna and Jose Maria Jaspik.

On the other hand the inauguration of Cinelandia also took place where Manu Chao presented movies that have touched her life, including Los Olvidados by Luis Buñuel and Princesas by fellow Spaniard Fernando Leon de Aranoa.

A press conference was held for the movie Otra Película de Huevos y un Pollo by brothers Rodolfo and Gabriel Riva Palacios, which surprised many as the film chosen to inaugurate FLCG24. The cast and crew from the movie, present at the press conference, said that they felt proud and honored that the Festival had considered them for the opening, and underscored that the picture is worthy of its participation.

Producer Francisco Arriagada mentioned that the team consisted of 400 people totally dedicated to the project, including designers, creative talent, screenwriters, actors and so forth. The innovation of this movie is that although it is in 2D, it contains 3D elements that make it more dynamic and appealing. The quality of animated films in Mexico has increased thanks to people interested in this genre such as the Riva Palacios brothers.

Not unlike previous projects, this film underlines Mexican culture in its characters as well as in its script.

On the other hand, important celebrities strolled down the red carpet laid for the occasion to kick off the Festival in an environment of emotion and expectation.

The ceremony was hosted by Ofelia Medina and Daniel Gimenez Cacho who began with Jean Luc Goddard’s phrase, “Photography is truth and a film is truth 24 times per second”.

The long-awaited homage to popular immortal Pedro Infante arrived. His daughter Lupita Infante received a Silver Mayahuel from Raul Padilla Lopez to a standing ovation for the night’s most emotive moment.

Colombian cineaste Victor Gaviria also received a Silver Mayahuel from Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who gave a unique touch to the ceremony.

The inaugural film Otra Película de Huevos y un Pollo was screened and immediately afterwards the filmmakers and part of the cast came on stage. Gabriel Riva Palacios once again thanked the Festival for choosing his film for the opening and said they were proud and honored by the distinction.

Son of actors Jose Angel Garcia and Patricia Bernal, he began his acting career with them as a child acting on stage.

He moved to London to study acting at the Cathedral School of Speech and Drama and acted in short films such as De Tripas Corazón by Antonio Urrutia that was nominated for an Oscar.

He made his first movie, Amores Perros by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu in 2000 that catapulted him onto the international stage.

Since then, his magnificent interpretations have positioned him as one of the most recognized international actors.

Y Tu Mamá También by Alfonso Cuaron, El Crimen del Padre Amaro by Carlos Carrera, Diarios de Motocicleta by Brazil’s Walter Salles, Babel by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu and Mala Educación by Pedro Almodovar are just some of the films that have earned  him, besides prestige from critics and international audiences alike, numerous prizes at film festivals where his movies have been screened.

But Gael Garcia Bernal is more than a talented actor. In 2005 he founded along with his great friend and actor Diego Luna and Pablo Cruz Ambulante Gira de Documentales, an itinerant festival of documentaries for the purpose of promoting documentary movies in Mexico, and their presentation and production in different media. Ambulante’s success has gone beyond the borders of Mexico and has been seen on Argentina, Norway, Cuba, Spain, the United Kingdom and Tanzania.

As part of his tireless concern for films, Gael Garcia Bernal is the executive producer along with Diego Luna of CANANEA FILMS, a company founded by Pablo Cruz with the goal of bolstering Latin American production and lending support to new filmmakers. Films such as Como Voy a Explotar by Gerardo Naranjo, Sin Nombre by Cary Fukunaga and Sólo Quiero Caminar by Agustin Diaz are part of this company’s productions.

The International Film Festival in Guadalajara is proud to award the Guadalajara Prize this year to actor and producer Gael Garcia Bernal.

Young professionals and film, communications and other audiovisual arts students from Guadalajara, as in other years, will gather with some of the world film industry’s most outstanding professionals who will give lectures to share their experience, advice and vision of their work, ending in a question-and-answer session. This event takes place in collaboration with the Center for Audiovisual Arts (CAAV).

Professionals of the stature of Bertha Navarro, John Sayles, Fernando Eimbcke, Albertini Carri, John Waters, Rubem Fonseca and Costa-Grava among others have participated in recent years.

This year we will be joined by Peter Broderick, Maria Novaro, Maestro Alfredo Joscowicz, Sergio Arau and Virginia Garcia del Pino.

On the other hand 620 movies including 278 feature-length fiction, 144 documentaries and 198 shorts have enrolled in the 7th Guadalajara Film Market where 140 participants will gather for this edition, including buyers, distributors, exhibitors and television representatives.

The MADE IN MEXICO section will offer 19 Market screenings exclusively of Mexican films recently produced in 2008 – 2009.

And SHORT-UP!!! will present four Mexican shorts programs – fiction, documentary and animation – recently produced in 2008 – 2009, with a total of 31 short features.

The seventh edition of the Guadalajara Film Market will be held from March 19 to 26 as part of the International Film Festival in Guadalajara.
