Biografía
Miguel Gomes nace en Lisboa en 1972. Estudia en la Escuela de Cine y Teatro de Lisboa y, entre 1996 y 2001, trabaja como crítico de cine en la prensa portuguesa. Sus cortometrajes han sido premiados en festivales como el de Oberhausen, Vila do Conde, Belfort y Cinema Texas y han sido exhibidos en los festivales de Locarno, Rotterdam, Buenos Aires y la Viennale, entre otros. Su largometraje debut, A Cara Que Mereces (La Cara que Mereces), se estrena en 2004.
Biography
Miguel Gomes was born in Lisbon in 1972. He went to the Lisbon Film and Theatre School and between 1996 and 2001 worked as a film critic for the Portuguese press. His film shorts have won awards at festivals such as: Oberhausen, Vila do Conde, Belfort and Cinema Texas and have been shown in Locarno, Rotterdam, at the Viennale and Buenos Aires among others. His feature film debut was in 2004 with A Cara Que Mereces (The Face You Deserve).
Sinopsis
En el corazón de Portugal, entre las montañas, el mes de agosto es un alboroto de gente y actividad. Emigrantes vuelven a casa, disparan fuegos artificiales, controlan incendios, cantan karaoke, se tiran de los puentes, cazan jabalíes, beben cerveza y hacen bebés. Si el director y el equipo de filmación se hubieran avocado al asunto, resistiendo la tentación de unirse a las festividades, la sinopsis se reduciría a: Aquel Querido Mes de Agosto” sigue la relación afectiva entre padre e hija, y el primo de ésta, todos músicos en una banda de baile. Así que entonces, amor y música.
Synopsis
August is the time of holidays and village feasts. Emigrants and city dwellers return to their birthplace. Our Beloved Month of August at first looks like a documentary about a film that doesn’t get made. The shots of a loafing crew taking part in the summer festivals, however, slowly changes to something else: the filming of the thick script about which the director Miguel Gomes is continually quarrelling with his producer. In that script, we follow 15-year-old Tania, the singer in her father’s band, and her amorous vicissitudes with her cousin. Against the background of Portuguese rural life with its Portuguese tear-jerkers, the relationship between Tania and her father turns out to be less than pure.
